What is DECA?
DECA is a business focused club. In DECA you do mock interviews, present business plans, and take tests in order to have the highest scores. DECA is divided into two sections: the role play and the business plan. In role play events, students take a test before the tournament and on the day of competition partake in a mock interview. Students can win role play awards, test awards, and can win the whole event if they do well with both. In business plan events, students write a business plan and submit it before the tournament and the day of present their business or project to the judges. You can do both at one competition also. DECA Business Law and Ethics Team Decisions Making event (And getting to Internationals 2018 and 2020)
Hello y'all! My partner and I worked our way to Internationals for Business Law twice and I think I learned a lot about DECA and the event on my journey. So please enjoy and share if these tips help you.
1. Make a brochure.
2. Have switch queue.
3. Take practice tests.
4. Know laws
5. Practice with your partner
1. Make a brochure.
- In the event planning period, you are given paper and pencils. I strongly recommend that you use the paper to make a brochure as a visual for you to use. Fold your paper into thirds and fold the right fold under the left fold (all of this on top of the middle part). Use the first page as the title page for the company you are representing and your names. Then divide the rest of the brochure into the parts of the questions you have. This way you can have a visual and something to turn to for each part of the question if you forget or want to point to something.
2. Have switch queue.
- My partner and I had a queue for when to switch or when one of had a point to say. It would be rude just to cut my partner off during the interview. So, we kept my left and his right feet next to each other so when one wanted to speak, we would use our feet to tap the others. This keeps transitions smooth and communication high but not distracting.
3. Take practice tests.
- A portion of your ranking is based on your test score so don't ignore this part. I would recommend you pull up your scores by taking tests. You will get practice taking the tests but most importantly you will recognize questions and answers on your official test. Having a solid test score will help you place in the top of your competition.
4. Know laws
- When taking about laws and ethics it looks very good to a judge if you can reference specific laws. I only memorized a couple but I am able to pull them out and use them in my interview.
5. Practice with your partner
- Interviewing or presenting is very different with a partner so I recommend you practice with your partner over and over to build the flow and the chemistry. Figure out what each of you do during the prep period and implement it at the competitions.
